Dr. Maria A. Staropoli-Hafner, Psychologist

Helping high-achievers break free from anxiety and regain balance

If you feel like you’re constantly running on a hamster wheel—pushing yourself to meet impossible standards, overthinking every decision, and struggling to slow down—you’re not alone. As a licensed psychologist specializing in anxiety, OCD, skin picking, and related challenges, I help high-functioning individuals, including adults and teens, take control of their mental health, break unhelpful cycles, and find a sense of calm and confidence.

I work with adolescents and adults, including many college students and young professionals, who are ready to do the work and make meaningful changes. Whether you’re dealing with perfectionism, intrusive thoughts, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, or stress that feels overwhelming, my goal is to provide a structured, supportive space where you can develop skills to manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors more effectively.

My approach: Practical strategies for lasting change

I take a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach to treatment, helping clients recognize unhelpful thought patterns and learn how to shift them. My work is structured, evidence-based, and focused on equipping you with tools you can use in daily life—not just in therapy sessions.

I also integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other mindfulness-based techniques to help clients build flexibility, tolerate discomfort, and move forward with greater confidence. I believe that therapy should be goal-oriented, effective, and tailored to your needs, ensuring that every session brings you closer to the progress you want to see.

Who I help

  • Professionals and students struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, and self-doubt
  • Individuals dealing with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and intrusive thoughts
  • People experiencing trichotillomania (hair-pulling) and skin picking
  • High-functioning individuals who feel stuck in their thoughts or overwhelmed by stress
  • Teens and young adults navigating academic pressure, career uncertainty, and life transitions
  • Parents looking for guidance in supporting their child’s mental health

Many of my clients describe themselves as high-achievers, perfectionists, or people who “should” have it all together. If you’re feeling the weight of expectations, therapy can help you break free from the cycle of anxiety and self-criticism.

What you can expect in therapy

I know that asking for help isn’t always easy—especially when you’re used to being the one that others rely on. But you don’t have to go through this alone. In our work together, you can expect a supportive yet structured approach that provides both guidance and practical strategies to help you manage anxiety and stress.

Our focus will be on progress, not perfection, creating a space where you can learn, grow, and develop tools that work for you in real life. Therapy with me is a collaborative process—I bring a down-to-earth, empathetic style that helps clients feel understood while also challenging unhelpful patterns. Therapy isn’t about eliminating anxiety altogether; it’s about learning to manage it in a way that frees you to live the life you want.
